The Complete Guide to Eye Makeup

Create gorgeous eye makeup in just 5 steps

Applying eyeshadow may seem simple, but mastering eye makeup is an art form. You need the perfect nuances from complementing your eye color and skin tone to choosing the right brush.

With so many products on the market, it’s easy to not know where to start. That’s why we’ve curated this comprehensive 5-step guide to help you navigate the world of eyeliner, mascara, and eyeshadow. Whether you’re a beginner or a pro, our guide will help you create a dramatic look that highlights your beautiful eyes. Embark on this journey:

1. Start with a good makeup brush.

Just as famous artists rely on high-quality paintbrushes to create masterpieces, perfect makeup requires the right tools. Invest in high-quality makeup brushes for even, precise, and hygienic makeup application. Luckily, you don’t have to spend a lot of money to buy a top-of-the-line brush.

With 11 years of experience in the industry, we specialize in custom formulations, packaging solutions, and turnkey services for creating your own makeup line.

Experts at Thincen Cosmetic Research Institute Beauty Laboratory recommend using synthetic brushes instead of natural fiber brushes. Synthetic brushes are not only cheaper, but they are also easier to clean and hypoallergenic. (Fun fact: In our lab tests, the best-performing brushes were synthetic ones, and even pros couldn’t tell them apart from expensive natural brushes.)

2. Apply eyeshadow primer on your eyelids.

Get your go-to eyeshadow palette and eyeshadow brush. Apply your favorite base color all over your lids. Diffuse your base color to your brow bone for a dramatic smoky eye. Or, if you want an everyday, natural look, focus your base color on the moving lid, stopping in the crease.

To achieve the latter easily and successfully, use this foolproof technique. With your eyes open, apply eyeshadow to your lash line first, then blend downward toward your lash line. This strategic approach ensures you don’t cross the crease line or end up with an uneven, messy line.

3. Concentrate dark eye shadow on the wrinkles of the eyes.

Dark shades naturally attract light, so the crease is a great place to focus dark shades, adding depth and dimension and highlighting your eyes.

To achieve this look, use a domed blending brush (like the DIY 12Color Eyeshadow Palette ) and use the brush to create a rich, dark eyeshadow. Blend along the natural contour between the brow bone, eyelid, and eye socket line. Dark brown is a universally flattering option, like Thincen Cosmetics. It blends perfectly with any eye color.

If your eyes are covered and the upper eyelid blocks most of your eyelid movement when open, you may need to adjust the position of your crease shadow. Apply along the eye socket line and the color will disappear when you open your eyes. Instead, start with your eyes open and use your paintbrush to mark where you want the dark shadow to appear. Then close your eyes and blend outward to remove harsh lines. Concentrate the intensity of the paint on the outermost corners, creating a subtle “V” shape.

4. Use a dark color to draw the lash line.

Wearing good eyeliner will make your eyelashes look thicker and fuller. If you’re not a fan of traditional eyeliner, you can achieve a similar eye-popping effect (and remove it easily) by using a darker eyeshadow.

Use a flat, firm brush with short bristles. Press lightly along the eyelid line, above the upper lash line, and along the lower lash line to diffuse the dark eyeshadow. This soft contour strengthens and enriches your natural lashes.

If you want to trace your lash line along the waterline (innermost edge), be careful as the bristles are stiff and may cause irritation. Instead, choose one of your favorite waterproof eyeliner formulas to safely and accurately contour this delicate area.

5. Add highlights with shimmery eyeshadow.

For a dramatic, refreshed look, apply a light shimmery eyeshadow or highlighter just below the arched brow bone. This will instantly make your brows look more defined and lifted.

Next, take the same bright pearlescent color and dab it on the inner corners of your eyes to brighten the entire eye area and add some shine.

Once you’ve finished sculpting and highlighting, apply a few coats of your favorite volumizing and lengthening mascara to complete your multi-dimensional eye makeup, easily enhancing and shaping your work of art…

With a few well-chosen products and these simple yet effective tips, you’ll always have a professionally styled, multi-dimensional, and irresistible eye makeup look.
